Gallienus (AD 253–268) was a Roman emperor whose long reign, despite internal and external threats, left a remarkable legacy in Roman coinage. Known for his richly symbolic and often experimental antoniniani, his coins featured a wide variety of deities and military themes.

Ruling during the Crisis of the Third Century, Gallienus emphasized Sol Invictus, legions, and divine favor to project stability. After the capture of his father Valerian, Gallienus continued alone as emperor, implementing military reforms and attempting to preserve the empire's core. Collectors appreciate his coinage for its artistic variety, historical context, and frequent references to Roman religion and provincial legions.
